Brandelyn N. Castine

Brandelyn N. Castine is the author of Everybody Plays the Fool, a novel; Spoken Silence:
Life in Four Parts, a volume of poetry; and the novel U.G.L.Y.  Castine was born in Texas
and raised in Pasadena, California.  As a child, Castine was exposed to writing by her
grandmother who wrote a book in the 70’s called On the Duarte.  Inspired by talent of
women in her family, she began writing in her journal and drawing to express herself.  In
high school, Castine furthered her interest to writing poetry and after taking a creative
writing course at Cirtus College decided to pursue writing professionally.

Later, Castine earned her bachelor’s degree in English for the University of California,
Berkeley.  At Berkeley, Brandelyn was the recipient of several awards and accolades
including the Crothers Prize in Literary Composition. After graduation, she wrote her first
novel, Everybody Plays the Fool. This work was instrumental in creating the voice of this
author and establishing her position in the contemporary fiction world.  Through her
writing, Castine hopes to inspire people to love themselves more and always strive to
achieve their goals.  Castine spent 3 years working on her latest novel, U.G.L.Y.  who’s
main goal is to show readers how to combat self-esteem issues and refuse to allow the
media to dictate how people feel about themselves.

Castine currently lives in the Bay Area where she is also a contributing author in the
Gumbo For the Soul Anthology, a project that was created to raise funds to support
literacy programs in the Bay Area.  In addition, Brandelyn is currently working as a
freelance writer for Leather, Empress and Vapors Magazines.
